EVALCOMPLIN is a test whose objective is to design and validate an instrument to assess linguistic competence, specifically oral expression, in schoolchildren in the second cycle of Pre-school and the first cycle of Primary Education. The assessment is based on narrative strategies and focuses mainly on Spanish, with additional versions in Valencian, English and Chinese.
The study is aimed at children between 3 and 7 years old, who can participate if they meet the criteria established by the research team.
For a school to participate, it must contact the EVALCOMPLIN team of the University of Valencia. The enrolment process will include the signing of the Declaration of Knowledge and Authorisation by the school and the Informed Consent Document for Parents or Legal Guardians and Confidentiality Commitment for the participation of students.
The tests evaluate oral expression through narrative tasks and consist of two parts:
  • Narration from pictures: A sequence of images is presented on the theme "The Birthday", and the child is asked to describe what happens.
  • Narrative from a story: After listening to a short story about the morning routine ("On the way to school"), children are asked to relate their own experience of going to school.
In addition, some contextual data about the student and aspects related to his/her development are collected from the information provided by the teacher.

The aim is to obtain information on language development to identify possible difficulties and, if necessary, to implement strategies for support and improvement.
Participation in the study is completely voluntary. If a child expresses a desire not to continue with the test, the child’s decision should be respected and the assessment should be stopped immediately, without any pressure. In such cases, the research team will make a note of the situation, but the participant's partial responses will not be recorded or used.
No, participation in the study and access to the tests are completely free of charge.
The duration of the tests depends on the age and characteristics of each participant, but it is estimated that it takes between 15 and 20 minutes to complete the three sections. However, there is no set time limit. Since the assessment is aimed at young children, the sessions can be kept short and adjusted to their attention span.
EVALCOMPLIN implements security measures to protect the privacy of participants. An encryption system is used to prevent the direct identification of the data collected, in compliance with current data protection regulations.
